Mar was not the pup to cross.  The only people who could 'cross' her and get away with it to start were her parents and the Alpha.  Others would soon find themselves given the cold shoulder, dark glares and things going missing.  It couldn't be pinned to her, and she wasn't stealing them, just hiding them.  Eventually the people would find their belongings in their living spaces, but they would just have a dickens of a time finding them for a while.

No, this didn't make things any easier on Metzli members when this happened.  She was so quiet about all of her retributions that no one knew that crossing her was what got them the problems they got.

Admittedly, things only got convoluted after she was a teen.

With her craftiness and love for planning, she moved to train as Point as soon as she knew what they did.  Sure there was a Point already, but if something happened, and that person was killed, she would be ready to step in, and that was how she phrased it to both the existing Point and the Alpha when asked.  As well as her parents.  They suggested she train as something else in the mean time, and eventually she did.  Reluctantly, but she did.

The other pups, while she was younger, learned fairly quick that she was a planner, and she could often be found as the one directing the games of catch the target or find the hidden things.  If she wasn't the one that hid them in the first place, or wasn't the target herself.  No, she didn't always lead the winning team, but her team had definite plans and patterns as things progressed, and they got more detailed as she got older.  Some of the earliest plans she had were to assign other pups to search certain amounts of space, including herself, for example.

She could live with the idea that the failure of a Hunt would be on her shoulders- but it never came to pass, as the Point was strong and healthy all the way to her being an adult -and beyond.  So, on the side, she trained as a Hunter, and was perfectly comfortable taking orders.  (She might rail about stupid ones, but she knew her role, and followed it.)  The teamwork learned from the inside and the learning of how the Point sounded from that side were valuable learning experiences.  So too was seeing the training methods Hunters had to keep in shape.

When the Metzli moved to join the Raotani or the Yololitzli on Cruix, it being her father's former tribe was a weighing point for the decision of her parents to stay on-planet.  Herself, she thought of trying to move to the warmer planet, but figured she'd have just as much luck being Point there as on Yaolzerac, and didn't really feel like the move would benefit her.

In Raotani, there was also a strong and healthy Point, so she stayed a Hunter.  On the good news, she made a friend in the form of a Bemy named Den.  He was prone to thinking the worst of things, and she latched on to him, using his 'view of the worst' to root out any ways her plans might have to fail.  It worked beautifully and he was soon added to the list of people who wouldn't see retribution for crossing her.  (Yes, she was still making plans as a Hunter- she really couldn't help it.)

Alpha Ala got herself added to the list by sheer factor of being an enormous woman who was capable of looming enough to actually scare Mar.  Utam, Mar's father recalled that the Tyler Alpha line had a history of really big Bemy.  After he explained that the Raotani were now led by the Tyler Alpha line, his statement made all the sense in the world.

Eventually Mar and Den became such good friends that people assumed there was a Mate Dream a'comin', but the two just laughed and shook it off.

******************************************************************

His grandfather died the year after he was born.  He'd have missed him, but Den barely knew him.  He learned plenty about him later though, and developed a sense of 'I wish I'd known him,' but tempered that with 'probably wouldn't have liked me if I had.'  Because he was pretty sure everyone disliked him.  That everything that could go wrong would.  It was just a pity he wasn't really any good at planning ahead in high detail past, 'what if I- oh wait, that wouldn't work,' went, or he might have been a good Point-trainee or Hutch- or even one of the crafters- if his downside of things outlook would have let him.

Den learned early on that his cries of 'it's gonna go wroooong' were only frustrating to other pups, so he wasn't surprised by the fact that they rarely wanted to include him in games with chance involved.  He tried to limit his fatalistic calls, to repair the situation, but then he wasn't really comfortable in the games any more.  So he sat on the sidelines often as not, and watched.  He did like spending time with them, after all.

However, he did develop his detail-spotting skills so that his 'it's gonna go bad' could have reasoning to back it up.  Which made him more welcome in some of those games, but none of the other pups seemed to use it quite right.  Or at least he didn't click with them when they tried to make use of it.

Still, that skill made him look to Scouts and Trackers as a possible occupation and Rank.  And did cautiously enjoy the lessons from the elder Scouts.  He learned all the tricks of spotting trails, ignoring weather where possible, and how to smell for prey, other Scouts or bad storms.  He had a near miss with a White Out that left him, his teacher and a neighboring tribe's Scout snowed into a hidey hole for a while.  The elder two tried not to talk about their antics while they were snowed in, but he'd show off a rare grin if asked, and then reply 'I learned a loooot of things.'

After Metzli merged into Raotani, Den was happy to see a few familiar faces (he had run into Scouts several times (and some other members as well on occasion) and kept company rather nicely for him), and let the other Scouts know it.  (Very energetically, which was a little bit of a surprise to them, because they knew him as the 'sour face' more often.)

And then he met Mar, and that was a whole other type of 'hit it off.'  At first he thought she hated him, because he kept pointing out where plans would go awry.  But she kept coming back with details tweaked in those plans and demanding he 'find something wrong now!'  It confused him to no end at first.  But, as he'd never shied away from other Bemy company, much as his Downer Den nature might have led people to believe, so he was fairly quick to realize she was going to be a friend.  Maybe not the healthiest friendship, but he was happy to have one.  Of course, after befriending her, she made him drag her around to be introduced to others he could almost call friend, and it actually worked to make him more real friends than he'd realized he had before.  (He'd always been fairly nice about his Downer-isms, but sure that no one liked him for them.  They were just not keen on always hearing how things would go wrong and thus tried to avoid him when it came to game times.)
