Her mom was the first person to say the wrong thing in pretty much any situation. Family, friends, it didn't really matter. Luckily, Justina was more focused on the Mangoli that her father Riley had brought into the house, that had latched on to Wynne. It followed her around, and while Wynne would shoot it sour looks,that was typically the worst of her reactions to it. The little thing took it as acceptance, and of course Wynne was his favorite person.
Justina took from that, and her father's way of interacting with Mangoli that all animals had minds of their own, no matter how simply constructed they may be. She tried to work out what to do with that information as she grew, first wanting to follow in her father's footsteps, then wanting to train all animals, then learning how much time it took to learn and realizing she'd have to scale back.
So her school years reflected that. Justina would learn about a process and give over to learning it- vaguely wanting to learn all of it first and then scaling back to reasonable terms. Her grades were middling high, and friends enjoyed her company. Her sisters did as well, especially as Mariset was already determined to work with Mangoli as their father did.
When their science classes covered the dissection of animals, the teachers were careful to excuse any who couldn't perform the procedure, and reassure those remaining that the animals had been treated well in the process of their passing and preservation, Justina had it hammered home that this was not guaranteed for some animals. And from there, she studied rehabilitation. There were all kinds of classes for it; certifications galore and a fair few internships even. But she stuck through it. Justina's family was more than half expecting her to scale back on this plan like so many of her others, but she kept going with it, and made it to the end of the program. Her specialty, to go with her own ability to fly- after the lessons for it certified her, was in flying pets, but she could at least start working with a few of pretty well any type.
